Magnetic chucks have been accepted in the grinding industry for some time and the introduction of new and more powerful magnetic material has seen the milling and turning industry following suit. These milling magnets come in a variety of shapes and sizes including but not limited to the square pole and the longitudinal pole systems. Each type of pole design had its own unique way of clamping the work piece to the magnet and the forces generated by them were predictable and accurate with the proper knowledge of how the system works along with magnetic background on design.
Workholding requirements for hard machining require the power of these systems but also the ability to demagnetize the work piece, leaving little to no residual magnetism in the component. Combine the above with the fact the original systems have not changed in the last 30 plus years and the industry is looking for a better and more efficient way to hold their large as well as small applications, a need for a better magnet came to the surface.
This presentation deals with the latest advancement in permanent-electromagnetic workholding. The content is designed to address key concerns of the customers as well as educate them on magnetic technology, its benefits and limitations.
