Custom designed bi-directional seals

Ideal for a broad range of fluid delivery applications including medical and dental devices, bi-directional custom-design seals greatly improve fluid delivery systems by handling opposing pressures while preventing leakage. The double-lip seal solution ensures proper seal function in two directions. The seal works with an alternating motion, similar to the squeegee effect of a windshield wiper blade. The lip facing up contains downward fluid pressure. The lip facing down contains the upward fluid (negative) pressure.

To ensure the double lip seals are molded to very tight tolerances, Minnesota Rubber and Plastics (MR&P) engineers analyze the relationship between different materials, their properties, how processing changes them, and how the materials will perform in an application. For certain medical applications, the engineers use specially formulated ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) compounds. Formulated and molded to ensure low leachables and extractables, these seal materials are compatible with a wide range of fluids prescribed for administration through IV systems.

Mini-H gantry handling system

The EXCM mini-H gantry X-Y planar gantry system is fast, accurate, modular, and flexible; is plug-and-work for quick and easy start up; and is for small parts assembly and automation. Design of the new mini-H gantry is derived from industrial-scale systems being used in a range of industries.

The design, involving two motors and a toothed belt, is responsible for its overall small form factor, precision, and speed. The model EXCM-30 delivers speeds of up to 1.6fps (500mm/s), absolute accuracy of ±0.020" (±0.500mm), and repeatability of ±0.002" (±0.050mm).

A flexible interface concept provides users with a choice of TCP/IP Ethernet or CANopen for unlimited positioning, or digital I/O for up to 31 positions.

Small bore connector

The SRC small-bore connector from Colder Products Co. eliminates the potential for misconnection with luer fittings. The intuitive design is simple to operate and has an audible click for added assurance of a secure, leak-free connection. Coupling body and coupling insert in-line hose barbs are available to fit tubing sizes 1/8" and 3/16" (3.2mm to 4.8mm) ID. Made from polypropylene and thermoplastic elastomer, the SRC connector can be EtO, e-beam, or gamma sterilized. The SRC allows for tubing rotation to help avoid accidental disconnection or kinked tubing and features an elastomeric seal with a smooth, gap-free flow path that eliminates stagnant flow areas.




PEBA resists aging, UV light

Heat and light stabilized (HLS) polyether block amide (PEBA) copolymers resist oxidation and degradation during storage formulations and are manufactured from medical grade Pebax polymers and USP VI additives for use in medical device applications. Foster engineers have developed a targeted stabilizer system that can both decompose and neutralize the free radicals created by exposure to oxygen, heat, and UV light, which otherwise will initiate the loss of polymer properties. These polymer formulations can extend reliable functionality of medical devices.

Foster HLS polymer formulations are based on all available medical grade Pebax polymers, along with radiopaque compound formulations that provide fluoroscopic visibility for catheter and minimally invasive device applications.

Response to light
In a recent Foster study, HLS 2533 MED demonstrated substantial long-term property retention compared to the non-stabilized PEBA medical grade. Following six months of exposure to multi-source indoor light, HLS 2533 MED test samples retained 99% tensile strength whereas the non-stabilized PEBA samples demonstrated severe degradation and property attrition after 3 months of light exposure.

Disc magnet motor

The P760 series disc magnet motor, which outperforms standard brushless DC motors in various applications, is a unique thin-disc magnet motor that has been optimized to deliver high torque and acceleration up to 5,000rpm. This performance comes by combining the disc magnet technology with an optimized number of pole pairs. Disc magnet technology provides very low inertia while optimization of pole pairs balances the iron losses versus the joule losses. This high-speed stepper motor can deliver a boosted torque of 0.7Nm with inertia as low as 17E-7kg/m2.



USB micro-positioning stage

The M3-LS linear smart stage is a USB micro stage with fully integrated drive electronics and the industry’s smallest all-in-one positioning stage. Absolute encoding eliminates the need to home the stage on power-up, a significant improvement over stepper motor driven stages that must be homed to locate the zero reference position every time power is cycled, and during operation can lose count of steps moved.

The M3-LS smart stage is driven by a self-locking Squiggle piezo motor and holds position when power is turned off. When restarted, its absolute encoding allows it to move directly and immediately to the commanded position.

To achieve absolute encoding, New Scale engineers integrated a low-resolution optical encoder into the stage to complement the stage’s existing high-resolution magnetic encoder. On power-up, the M3-LS automatically queries the optical encoder to determine absolute stage position within 0.5mm. It combines that result with the higher-precision magnetic encoder reading to determine absolute position with 0.5µm resolution.

For the M3-LS linear smart stage, engineers developed a slide with six radial ball bearings arranged in a kinematic V guide way that has zero clearance, high stiffness, and nearly zero friction. The friction is uniform over the entire travel range, under high direct loads and side loads, and has low sensitivity to particles.

High flex, high temperature coaxial cables

Ultra flexible and high temperature coaxial cables have been designed for tight routing installation, continuous motion, phase stability, excessive heat (+260°C) and extremely cold bend temperature exposure (-65°C).

Cicoil’s flexible 30AWG Flat Coaxial Cable is available in 50Ohm and 75Ohm versions with one to eight coax conductors, and is excellent for high-performance video transmission applications.

Through a patented extrusion process, each coax conductor can be placed in a flat, Flexx-Sil profile, precisely controlling the spacing of each component, insulation thickness, and the overall cable shape. The halogen-free and flame retardant design is engineered to provide weight savings, low line-to-line skew, and maximum signal integrity.

The tear resistant Flexx-Sil jacket is also self-healing from small punctures and will not wear, crack, or deform due to long-term exposure to vibration, radiation, corrosion, salt water, ice, steam, sunlight, humidity, ozone, UV light, autoclave, and many chemicals.
