Today means it’s less than 4 weeks until Thanksgiving, a little more than 8 weeks until the New Year, and just more than 10 months until IMTS 2020. With new hires around the manufacturing industry, new advancements in medical technology, and company expansions, here’s a quick weekend read to help you catch up.
Solar Manufacturing opens new plant
Solar Manufacturing Inc. opened a new, 59,000ft2 plant with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Oct. 24, 2019. Located at 1500 East Clymer Ave. in Sellersville, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, it’s the first business to build in the newly established Sellersville Business Campus.
Building on two of the six lots now occupying land vacated by AMETEK, Solar Manufacturing owners William and Myrtle Jones were keen to breathe new life into the community after AMETEK and its 1,500 employees left the area in 2008.
“It is important that we invest in our communities,” William says. “When AMETEK left, they left more than a couple of vacant lots. It’s our goal to grow and support the local economy.”
Currently employing 55 people, Solar Manufacturing aims to increase that number as business grows.
New director of sales at Forest City Gear
Brad Lindmark has been hired as the director of sales to help meet the growing demands of Forest City Gear’s customers.
Lindmark brings a wealth of sales and marketing experience and a deep familiarity with all facets of inside and outside sales and customer service, along with a strong background in the metalworking industries. This background, combined with his sales and marketing leadership skills, made him an ideal candidate for the position, says Forest City Gear President and CEO Wendy Young.
Stefan Widing appointed president, CEO of Sandvik
Sandvik's Board of Directors has appointed Stefan Widing as new president and CEO for Sandvik. Widing will assume the position Feb. 1, 2020, succeeding Björn Rosengren who at the same time leaves Sandvik.
Since 2015 Widing has been executive vice president of Assa Abloy and president of HID Global Corp., a technology division within Assa Abloy. He holds a M. Sc. in Applied Physics and Electrical Engineering and a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. Prior to his current role he was the general manager for Assa Abloy’s Shared Technologies and before that he held various positions in Assa Abloy and SAAB Aerospace.

Sandvik Coromant Center to open in North Carolina
Sean Holt, head of Sales Area Americas for Sandvik Coromant announced a new Sandvik Coromant Center will open in Mebane, North Carolina, where customers and partners will be fully immersed in the latest technology and superior digital machining techniques, including CoroPlus, the platform that brings connectvitity to manufacturing. Currently, Sandvik Coromant has a Production Unit in Mebane that manufactures special and standard products and will expand the existing production site space to fully utilize capabilities of the current building. Construction is targeted to be completed near the end of 2020.
According to Holt, "It is crucial to have a Sandvik Coromant Center located in the heart of our customer landscape, especially as we focus more on providing premium experiences to our most valuable customers. In addition, I see great potential for synergies resulting from the proximity to our Production Unit. We will be able to provide our customers and partners a fully integrated customer experience and enable closer alignment between supply and Sandvik Coromant Center functions.”
The new Sandvik Coromant Center will be a hub for training, R&D testing, customer projects, digital live machining, and most of all, an overall immersion into a state-of-the-art Sandvik Coromant experience. Complete with a large auditorium, integrated showroom, and modern machine tools, this new Center will also house a digital live machining system for broadcasting training and machining demonstrations which will allow for collaboration with others from around the globe in real time.
Index hires Matt Voyles as service manager to oversee US, Canada
Matt Voyles has been hired by Index as service manager, responsible for overseeing the 22 field service engineers that respond to customer needs across the U.S. and Canada, as well as coordinating with personnel at Index’s network of 19 distributors.
Voyles has more than 20 years of manufacturing equipment service experience, first at Carl Zeiss and then with Makino/Single Source Technologies. He has been in a management role for nearly a decade, overseeing a service team that grew to include more than 40 team members.
Big Kaiser enhances online access to 2D, 3D tooling data
Big Kaiser has redesigned one of the most popular tools on its website, the manuals, DXF and STEP (STP) Search. As users type a catalog number into the search field, a drop-down menu will display available DXF, STP, and manuals.
DXF standard allows customers to combine products from multiple companies with unified layer structures. The STP standard keeps things simple for program simulation. DXF access is open to anyone but STP downloads will require a login (application link on download page).
Injectsense’s pressure sensor, organ-to-data connection
Injectsense, a sensor-enabled digital health company, completed a successful in-vivo animal study of the first implantable sensor and monitoring system designed to collect long-term intraocular pressure (IOP) data. The Injectsense IOP-Connect system creates an organ-to-cloud data connection that enables the clinician to assess glaucoma therapy effectiveness at any time. The system is expected to provide unprecedented visibility into the IOP profile of the patient over time, and into previously unobserved changes that may affect glaucoma progression.
As part of the study, researchers at an accredited US research organization were able to implant the self-anchoring sensor safely and collect accurate pressure readings – in agreement with tonometry measurements – for the week-long test period. No device-related adverse events were reported.
Beyond ophthalmology, the sensor-enabled digital health platform is highly versatile, potentially enabling diagnostic and therapeutic applications in many different domains, from intracranial, urological, and various cardiovascular pressure parameters to neurosurgery and fluidic applications.
