IMTS 2018 Conference: Selective Laser Sintering: Additive Manufacturing with Polymers is Closer Than You Think

Learn how to integrate selective laser sintering into traditional production processes

Plan to attend The IMTS 2018 Conferences to give you deeper insight into new manufacturing technologies and ideas!

About the topic

Powder bed 3D printing, commonly referred to as selective laser sintering (SLS), in polymers is more than 25 years old. However, it is often still seen as a functional prototyping solution or short, low-volume manufacturing approach. Interestingly, direct metal laser sintering (DMLS), while significantly newer on the market, is more commonly associated with manufacturing end-use parts. New materials, higher speed systems, more robust software when combined with smart part design for manufacturing and an understanding of how to integrate SLS (polymers) into traditional production processes are changing the perception of the capabilities of the technology and present the opportunity for users and potential users to rethink the scale and type of production that is possible with SLS in the polymer area. Key factors in new material development, specific advances in hardware and software, and resulting examples of cost per part achievements in polymer SLS manufacturing will be presented.

Benefits/take-aways

  • Understand the key factors in what makes a polymer work in selective laser sintering
  • Define important elements in how materials, processes can influence cost per part
  • Describe how new system features, software, secondary processing setups enable efficient production with AM
