As part of the medical technology industry’s multi-front battle to combat the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the Advanced Medical Technology Association (AdvaMed) announced the launch of VentConnect, a new platform to connect ventilator companies with component suppliers to help quickly scale production and distribution of these vital devices.
The platform was developed pro bono with the Aerospace Industries Association (AIA), Google, and other industry alliances and partners. AIA represents more than 300 high-tech manufacturers and suppliers of all sizes across a range of sectors. AdvaMed is the world’s largest medical technology association, representing more than 400 companies, including ventilator manufacturers. In addition to AIA members, more than 50 companies – such as Stanley Black & Decker, and Arrow Electronics – from a range of industries are contributing as suppliers to VentConnect.

Those who were looking to make "the impossible…possible" turned to Servometer, in Cedar Grove, NJ, to manufacture several bellows used in critical ventilator applications. Servometer's electroforming technology developments have been helping customers create extremely accurate and reliable devices since 1957.
At Economy Spring & Stamping, in Southington, CT, a team of engineers were able to utilize additive manufacturing to answer a local call for help. Early in the pandemic, they addressed a shortage of PPE masks at a Connecticut hospital, delivering the first batch of 3-D printed masks in under a week.
The Ohio Manufacturing Alliance to Fight COVID-19 has been helping manufacturers retool and repurpose to help fill the significant need for PPE. Hundreds of companies have retooled to manufacture a variety of PPE. As a result, the Ohio Emergency PPE Makers’ Exchange has been established, primarily for smaller volume purchases of PPE from retooled or repurposed manufacturers.
Ohio is currently requiring face coverings to stay open. To be sure that our manufacturers are able to stay safe with PPE, MAGNET, the Ohio Manufacturers' Association, and Ohio MEP, have been working to create locally-made stockpiles of cotton face masks and plastic face shields for Ohio manufacturers to purchase to use where appropriate in regard to industrial safety protocols. Tessy Plastics partners with Onondaga County to fight COVID-19
Tessy Plastics Corp. is manufacturing face shields in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to the shortage of personal protective equipment, Tessy Plastics has been prototyping a variety of products related to the testing and treatment of the COVID-19 pandemic. Tessy took the initiative to invest in the injection molds necessary to produce the face shields and has partnered with Onondaga County on this effort.
“We are dedicating our engineering and manufacturing resources to get these face shields into market as quickly as possible. I am excited our team has been able to develop this product to support our local community,” says Roland Beck, president and owner.
The face shield is a three-piece assembly that is comprised of a headband, visor, and shield. The product is used to protect the facial area and associated membranes from splashes, sprays, and spatter of body fluids.
“Initially, we 3D printed the prototype and modified the design for injection molding capability, functionality, and comfort. The face shield is engineered to minimize the ability for particles to be exposed to a person’s face. It is a one size fits all and can be sanitized for medical use. Each face shield will be shipped as a separate component for quick assembly in the field. This approach allows us to reduce our time to market and increase the volume as needed,” says Stafford Frearson, vice president of engineering.

Dassault Systèmes released additional details around their partnership with China’s Central-South Architectural Design Institute (CSADI), which used donated simulation software from Dassault Systèmes to complete construction of Wuhan’s modular Leishenshan Hospital in just 12 days. The project comes as part of several initiatives from Dassault Systèmes focused on reducing the impact and spread of the COVID-19, including the Open COVID-19 Community.
CSADI was also able to use the software to design a ventilation system in a 79,900 sq. ft. hospital that minimized cross-infection in the building as well as any impacts on external communities, crowds and surroundings. Within just a few days, CSADI was able to simulate the spread of the virus through the hospital and the ways that it could be contained, in order to design a ventilation system that optimized containment of the virus.
Fictiv announced that hospitals and healthcare providers can begin ordering the protective face shields in batches of up to 10,000 per order at cost for shipment as fast as one (1) day. The company is leveraging its global manufacturing network and a newly designed tool to produce millions of face shields available in the fight against COVID-19.
Fictiv has invested in the upfront tooling costs to make the shields available as quickly and easily as possible to healthcare agencies, service providers, distributors, and even non-healthcare OEMs that are pivoting to support the healthcare industry during this crisis. The pricing will be matched to cost, and additionally, any longer-term profits beyond initial tooling and unit manufacturing costs will be donated to the COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund for WHO.
The shield is based on open-source face shield designs, similar to the visor recommended by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), but is modified with a closed top to be more consistent with the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) recommendations. While many recent face shields have been manufactured using 3D printing, Fictiv’s team of manufacturing experts, including engineers with experience at enterprise medical device companies, has modified the design and set up an injection molding tool to reach production volumes up to 100x greater than 3D printing for a production quantity totaling millions of shields per month.

3M, working overtime to increase production of necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) and other medical supplies sent a letter from 3M Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Mike Roman to William Barr, attorney general of the United States; Larry Hogan, governor of Maryland and chair of the National Governors Association; and Tim Fox, attorney general of Montana and president of the National Association of Attorneys General, highlighting 3M's actions to curb counterfeiting and price gouging of personal protective equipment (PPE) during the COVID-19 pandemic. The letter also urges federal and state governments and law enforcement officials to continue to lead the fight, with 3M’s support and assistance, against those who are exploiting the crisis by marketing counterfeit products or gouging the public.
So while sad, yet typical of people taking advantage during times of crises – a pandemic – many, like 3M are open and helping keep manufacturing going across medical and other industries.

Vesconite willing to manufacture ventilators - Last week, Vesconite sent 25,000 emails to customers and contacts throughout the world asking whether any had experience in making ventilators.
With no expertise in this technology but, with 70 CNC lathes and machining centers, and injection-molding and mold-making departments, and a desire to assist those who may require ventilators, the company received several favorable replies.
Among these are the recommendation that companies come together to produce a current design if a manufacturer makes their drawings available, or licenses them for use over this critical time.
Alternatively, it was proposed to manufacture a traditional design, the Manley Ventilator, which is a simple and robust mechanical device that the company may be able to reverse engineer if it can find a unit in working order.
"If you have ventilator expertise or know a company that does have the expertise, we would like to hear from you,” says CEO Dr Jean-Patrick Leger.
The coronavirus is likely to result in a need for hundreds of thousands of ventilators worldwide: data shows 5% to 10% of people infected need to be supported on ventilators for two to three weeks.

HP Inc. and its global digital manufacturing community are mobilizing 3D printing teams, technology, experience, and production capacity to help deliver critical parts in the effort to battle the COVID-19 pandemic. More than 1,000 3D printed parts have already been delivered to local hospitals. HP’s 3D R&D centers in Barcelona, Spain; Corvallis, Oregon; San Diego, California; and Vancouver, Washington are collaborating with partners around the world in a coordinated effort to increase production to meet the most urgent needs. Initial applications being validated and finalized for industrial production include face masks, face shields, mask adjusters, nasal swabs, hands-free door openers, and respirator parts. HP is also coordinating with government, health, and industry agencies in numerous countries to ensure a synchronized and effective approach.

Global Center for Medical Innovation (GCMI) announced a collaboration that addresses the severe shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE) for protecting the nation’s hospital workers from the COVID-19 pandemic. The initiative provides, free-of-charge, the designs, with necessary regulatory guidance, for any Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) compliant manufacturing facility to use in the production and distribution of face shields to healthcare workers.
The initiative is a collaboration between GCMI; Dr. Joanna Newton, Pediatric Hematologist/Oncologist, Aflac Center and Blood Disorders Center of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, Emory University School of Medicine; Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Pediatric Technology Center; and a team of scientists and researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology and its Invention Studio.
Web Industries Inc., a precision converter and contract manufacturing organization (CMO), allocates production capacity at its Holliston, Massachusetts plant to support developers of COVID-19 lateral flow immunoassay (LFI) diagnostic tests. LFI tests are one type of diagnostic device under research and development as public health leaders seek solutions to efficiently test large numbers of people for COVID-19.

Ultimaker is making its global network of 3D printing hubs, experts, and designers directly available to hospitals in need of tools and applications that are short in supply and can be quickly produced with 3D printing.
Connect and Print: Hospitals that face acute shortages of critical parts and that have approved 3D print designs and material specifications already available can directly connect with 3D printing experts nearby to send their 3D print requests to be printed. Ultimaker makes in-house 3D printing capacity available as well. A continuously updated map shows which 3D printing hubs are available nearby.
Design, Check, and Print: If a hospital needs help designing parts and tools that run out and are now in limited supply, Ultimaker is making a team of highly motivated designers and application engineers available to support in designing and creating the desired part. This part is printed by the nearest 3D print hub and sent to the hospital as soon as possible. After testing and receiving approval of the hospital, the part is available for further 3D printed production.

Excellerate’s Emergency Deployable Medical Units provide hospitals with much-needed additional space to help with hospital overflow capacity. SEAMS announced this week, a program to provide open capacity to help manufacturers in need where their own factories were closed or could not meet production requirements. The program had an overwhelming response from members and non-members willing to pitch in and support the industry as a whole. The US government and Healthcare Industry are looking for assistance to produce necessary medical products and once again the association stands ready to leverage a strong network to assist.

Disc Makers’ face shields will be assembled and packaged in its Pennsauken, NJ, facility. The company expects to rapidly evolve its product design and selection based on market feedback and demand.
Luvu Brands Inc. designer, manufacturer, and marketer of a portfolio of consumer lifestyle brands, is rebooting its operations to help combat the critical shortage of personal protective masks that faces hospitals, health care workers and consumers. Louis Friedman, founder and CEO, hopes the company can produce 100,000 masks weekly.
Larson Electronics has N95 available at many quantities. These masks have a 95% filter efficiency rate and offer protection against the corona virus, bacteria and dust. For best results, the disposable masks should be put on with clean hands. Individuals should also avoid touching the front of the mask and getting it wet (according to the World Health Organization). For general disinfection of surfaces, devices and equipment, we offer individual hand sanitizer wipes.
Life Spine, a medical device company that designs, develops, manufactures and markets products for the surgical treatment of spinal disorders, announced today that in partnership with Gizmo Medical they are currently working on a production quantity of surgical masks and gowns and identifying ways to scale other medical equipment to meet the growing and urgent demand in the United States.

ZOLL Medical Corp., an Asahi Kasei Group company that manufactures medical devices and related software solutions, is taking aggressive steps to increase manufacturing capacity to 10,000 ventilators per month in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This represents almost a 25-fold expansion from recent production volumes. The company has reached out to its supply base, most of which is in the United States, to enlist their support in meeting this demand.
Yates Electrospace Corp. announced the launch of a civilian subsidiary, AVIUS Air Delivery, to provide immediate air response for humanitarian relief efforts, natural disasters and pandemics such as the current COVID-19 crisis, based on the technology of their successful 1-ton, military resupply glider Silent Arrow.

PVA, a global supplier of robotic manufacturing and dispensing equipment servicing the electronics, medical device, telecommunications, semiconductor, and defense industries, has created a low-cost mixing dispensing system to help manufacturers in producing more hand sanitizer.

University of Wisconsin-Madison engineers are working with Madison-area manufacturers on medical face shields for healthcare workers treating coronavirus patients.
A first batch of face shields has been created for UW Hospital, with plans to deliver samples to other local hospitals for feedback. The group also has published its design as open source — which can be seen here. — and it is already be replicated by others across the world.
The medical face shields, which are key pieces of personal protective equipment (PPE), come from a design consulting firm Delve, and campus colleagues, according to a release on Monday.
The group has built prototypes and launched a website. where it’s encouraging healthcare facilities, manufacturers and donors to fill out an intake form to help assess need and build more connections while production capacity is rapidly expanded.
Minneapolis-based USofCare worked with U.S. Digital Response Team to launch Project N95, a platform that connects healthcare providers who need access to PPE with manufacturers who can meet demand.
Protolabs currently has 14 molding presses loaded with ventilator parts with thousands of parts already completed and ready to go to our customer for final assembly and distribution to hospitals.

Formlabs is working with a leading Boston-based hospital and several others around the country to 3D print swabs used for COVID-19 testing.
Due to shortages, UM Makerspace has have assembled a team from the UW Hospital, UW Makerspace, Delve and Midwest Prototyping to design a medical face shield shown in the images above. The design is based on shields currently used in hospitals (here) using very economic materials and scalable, advanced manufacturing processes.
EWI is actively working with a number of manufacturers to produce surgical masks in response to COVID-19 and the shortage of personal protective equipment for medical professionals. The masks can be 3D-printed immediately using EWI’s additive manufacturing capabilities and alternative materials.
