The new Ultra Narrow 600 series of vertical and horizontal machining centers from Mazak Corp. (www.mazakusa.com) offer more high volume aluminum processing in less space than conventional centers. Designed for mass production, the Ultra Narrow 600 Series has the same maximum machining diameter as do the conventional, but only a fraction of their width.
Both the vertical and horizontal machining centers feature a table size of 15.74 in. by 15.74 in. Maximum dimensions for workpieces are 23.62 in. by 19.68 in. Machine widths are only 27.36 in on the vertical machining center and 38.97 in. on the horizontal model.
The vertical Ultra Narrow 600 vertical machining center takes the straight X-axis motion of a conventional center to circular motion in the C axis on the table and Y axis on the spindle. On the horizontal model, the X axis is divided in two as the table and column both move.
With a 30-taper spindle and 20-tool storage capacity, the machines feature a 10 HP spindle with 20,000 rpm maximum speed. Dimensional accuracy is assured through ballscrew core cooling in all axes and an integral spindle/motor cooling system.
To further improve accuracy, the Ultra Narrow 600 Series eliminates backlash through use of a roller-gear system for the table-rotation mechanism.
