Firefly device receives FDA 510(k) clearance

Marketing of firefly device will start in the USA, offering faster muscle recovery and improved muscle performance after intense exercise.

Buckinghamshire, United Kingdom – Officials from Firstkind Ltd, a subsidiary of Sky Medical Technology Ltd, announce FDA clearance for U.S. commercialization of their sports recovery device, firefly, indicated for increased lower limb blood circulation to decrease muscle soreness after intense exercise and improve muscle performance.

The size of a wrist-watch and worn at the knee, the battery powered firefly device delivers painless electrical impulses to the common peroneal nerve to activate the muscle pumps of the lower leg that return blood towards the heart. The mechanism of action emulates the blood flow rate normally achieved by walking – up to 60% – without having to move or exert energy. An alternative or supplement to active recovery, such as light jogging or swimming, the firefly device increases blood circulation without re-imposing cardiovascular strain.

A clinically proven medical device, firefly is used by elite athletes and teams in the UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

Sarah Thomas, former GB International hockey player winning an Olympic bronze medal in the London 2012 Games and now Director of International Sport at Firstkind, said: “Having experienced the benefits of using firefly as part of my recovery protocol in the build up to and during the London 2012 Games and introducing the device to other elite athletes and professional sports teams in the UK since joining Firstkind I am now looking forward to building strong networks in elite sport across the USA. Incorporating this innovative device into recovery strategies in order to help an athlete recover back to baseline quicker can be a key determinant for success.”
