Witzig & Frank will exhibit its TRIFLEX modular, multi-station CNC machining center/flexible manufacturing cell. Designed around a rotary transfer concept, the TRIFLEX system can incorporate from two to seven CNC machining centers on a common base to provide five-sided machining of components up to 200 mm on a side. The TRIFLEX design offers flexibility to users along with very short cycle times. The machine uses a patented hanging indexing drum with hydraulically-clamped Hirth ring couplings to provide four positions 90° apart. The drum carries planetary table-mounted workholding units arranged tangentially, to permit five-sided machining of a workpiece in a single clamping. Other productivity enhancing features include the ability to change tools without stopping the spindle, and the permanent assignment of tools to a particular spindle. The TRIFLEX machine locates all roller guides, motors, CNC drives, ball screws, and measurement accessories outside the sealed workspace to prevent contamination with cutting fluids or chips.
