A-Sandor Inc., a small job shop specializing in prototyping and design work, had several customers that filed for bankruptcy, leaving the Ottawa, Ont., shop with many unpaid invoices and few prospects for new work. With no experience in marketing itself, A-Sandor decided to try MfgQuote.com, a website that links buyers and sellers of manufacturing services.

According to Sandor Nagy, president of A-Sandor, he finds new customers every day on the site. In fact, he reports that on occasion he's flooded with purchase orders and has to "lay off" the site for a while. Generally, he adds, the shop gets 10% of the RFQs it bids on.

When the shop started using the site, it bid on small jobs, some less than $100. Those same customers now send the shop jobs worth $10,000 and $15,000 a month.

"MfgQuote is the best service of its type because of the number and quality of the RFQs," says Nagy. With the site, the shop selectively chooses the jobs it wants to do and rejects doing business with customers it has had negative experiences with.

"Before, when we had two or three customers, we took whatever they sent," says Nagy. "If we didn't, we risked losing a customer. Now, we have freedom to pick and choose."

Nagy says the shop is doing well despite the manufacturing slump in Ottawa. Today, 95% of the shop's work comes from the U.S., and Nagy attributes A-Sandor's recovery "completely" to MfgQuote.com.
