Compact floating clamps
The clamping jaws of floating clamps hold the workpiece securely in position by spring force, but with a certain flexibility, and support it – which is why floating clamps are used with thin-walled components sensitive to bending. They also prevent vibrations and deflections during machining, which makes them ideal for blanks with fins or parts with complex or irregular shapes. Floating fixation of the part allows the freedom of motion for machining and produces precise results when working with sensitive workpieces, while minimizing clamping errors.
Floating clamps are available in two versions. Form A has fixed clamping jaws, while Form B allows the option of changing the clamping jaws. Form A is designed to generate load-bearing and clamping forces up to 5,000N; Form B can achieve load-bearing and clamping forces up to 8,000N. In both versions, the base body is made of nitrocarburized steel and the end stops are made of black anodized aluminum.
The floating clamp can be closed by means of a single actuating element to fix the component and then block the base body in the correct position. In the first step, the floating clamp is pressed downward so it’s underneath the workpiece. In the second step, the jaws of the floating clamp swivel all the way into position. Then the lower jaw should be in contact with the bottom of the workpiece. In the next step, the position of the floating clamp is fixed by tightening the hexagon nut. It’s important to tighten the nut within the minimum and maximum torque. Now the workpiece is clamped and supported.
