The Vertical Center Nexus (VCN) Compact vertical machining center looks to meet and exceed the medical industry’s growing demand for lean manufacturing through the use of small-footprint machines with strong cutting capabilities. The machine efficiently and accurately produces the medical industry’s typically small, extremely complex, and high-precision components requiring superior surface finishes. The compact size maximizes the use of valuable shopfloor space, allowing the grouping of multiple machines, closely together, for optimizing part production operations.
Mazak engineers built the VCN Compact with components and features specifically for optimizing that process. These include high-rpm, high-power spindles, extremely fast machine axis travels, and high-performance CNC machine controls, all combined on a compact, yet heavy and robust machine base requiring only about 47.7ft² (59.1" x 116.3") of floor space. Its space-saving size makes the VCN Compact the smallest vertical machining center in its class equipped with the strength of 40-taper spindles to handle the toughest medical materials.
Additionally, to better accommodate specific high-speed medical machining needs, Mazak offers the VCN Compact in 3- and 5-axis models, both of which can be equipped with either high-speed 12,000rpm or 20,000rpm spindles. The 5-axis model comes standard with a compact NC rotary/tilt table for high-precision contouring. The rotary/tilt table provides backlash-free, high-accuracy C-axis and A-axis movement that further adds to the machine’s ability to produce superior part surface finishes.
A double-arm-style automatic tool changer quickly exchanges tools in the VCN Compact’s spindle in just 1.3 seconds. In addition, for a machine of its size, the VCN Compact provides as much tool storage capacity as possible for part production versatility and continuous operation. The machine’s tool magazine accommodates 20 tools measuring up to 3.15" in diameter and as much as 7.8" long. Mazak also offers the option to increase that capacity to 30 tools for even more versatility and continuous operation.
