The steel frame of the future Cleveland Medical Mart & Convention Center continues to rise dramatically at the corner of St. Clair Avenue and Ontario Street, with crews already setting steel beams on the fourth level of the future structure. Structural steel and metal deck erection continues with two cranes working from the east and west sides, setting over 600 tons of steel with more than 40 ironworkers currently working on the Medical Mart steel erection.
Two of the three sequences of truss members for the main atrium support system have arrived and are being assembled on the ground. The Medical Mart atrium trusses, measuring more than 200ft long fully assembled, will be hoisted up in thirds beginning within the next week. Metal decking and shear studs are also progressing rapidly on multiple levels working toward conclusion in January 2012. Reinforcing for the concrete floors arrived earlier this week and the construction team will begin pouring the elevated floors next week.
The team has had two very productive weekends, working both Saturday and Sunday, to make up for the recent excessive rain. Turner Construction is anticipating that the team will also work this Saturday, weather permitting.
Roadway demolition is complete on the West 3rd Street ramp construction project as approximately 500 feet of structural walls and beams have been sound tested and restoration continues. Decking was delivered earlier this week and placement is scheduled to proceed at once. Rebar deliveries should begin next week.
On and under the future Mall C, structural steel and metal decking is now 99 % complete, providing a glimpse of the future ballroom roof. Shear studs will be installed this week and concrete placements will resume next week. The team has completed masonry work at the north egress stairs. Underground plumbing and electrical is progressing in the kitchen/commissary areas upon completion of the food and beverage drawings.
Under Lakeside Avenue, the construction team has installed rebar for the concrete column covering on the new columns supporting the roadway with the custom forms for the column covers scheduled to be delivered next week. Support framing along the south curb line is being erected in anticipation of the installation of winter weather enclosures.
On the Convention Center site south of Lakeside Avenue, work continues on the future East Concourse running along Public Auditorium including the continued progress of masonry and mechanical contractors on the concourse level. Underground utilities work continues including setting Air Handling Units (AHU) on concrete equipment pads. Rough-ins also started on main ductwork to the AHU’s on the East Concourse Level and fire protection piping has also begun. The spray-on fireproofing finished on the East Concourse earlier this week. Masonry along the east end of the Exhibit Hall is scheduled to be completed by the end of the week. Metal stud framing for the east Concourse wall will be starting in the near future.
The setting of new door thresh holds is complete, and installation of replacement entry doors and frames continues between Public Auditorium and the new Convention Center with work on schedule in the third connector. Work has also begun on the closure of the East Concourse from the Exhibit Hall so the construction team can temporarily heat the space this winter.
On the west side of the Convention Center site in the future Loading Dock area, the second of three post-tension pan concrete deck pours occurred last week with the last pour on schedule for next week.
FROM GROUNDBREAKING TO MASSIVE STEEL STRUCTURE IN 12 MONTHS
During the first six months of construction, crews demolished five existing buildings, including the 113 Building, former Chicago Title building, County Annex building, Justice Center parking garage, and the Sportsmans Restaurant, along with the existing Convention Center.
In July, the first of multiple massive concrete pours began on the future Medical Mart site. During the past six months, crews have completed pouring for the Medical Mart mat, east promenade, and the massive 600-foot long, 35-foot high structural wall stretching from the future Medical Mart to Public Auditorium.
On October 22, steel columns arrived on the job site, signaling a major milestone for the project. During the past three months, crews have erected steel columns in multiple locations, including the Medical Mart, Convention Center, east promenade, and the future ballroom north of Lakeside Avenue. More than 30 trusses, measuring more than 120 feet each, cover the future ballroom with the first glimpse of the roof and Mall C. Steel erection will continue throughout the winter and spring months with interior build out scheduled to begin in Fall, 2012 heading toward an August, 2013 opening.
The construction of Cleveland MMCC continues on time and on budget.
