Chicago, Illinois - Acoustech Systems has developed a novel product which applies intense high frequency vibrations to traditional metalworking processes. With the introduction of acoustical vibrations at the cutting face, friction within the process is significantly altered – thereby decreasing heating effects. As a result, manufacturers can obtain performance benefits in the form of increased feed rates, better tool life, higher quality parts, and/or better surface finish. This presentation will provide the technical background on the mechanisms of the process, validation by laboratory and industrial demonstrations, and an overview on how the technology can be fitted to new or existing systems.
About the speaker
Matt Short is renown within the manufacturing industry for his broad expertise in the fields of power ultrasound, plastic assembly, automated system design, tool and die design, and CAD/CAM systems. He is the inventor of Acoustech™ machining, a cutting-edge ultrasonic application that can improve the performance, enhance the productivity, and extend the life of conventional metalworking equipment and tools. Matt’s unique skills and experience in high-power ultrasonic systems, applications, and design have helped customers implement innovative technology and processes.
Prior to joining EWI, Matt served as an engineer for a Columbus-based machine builder specializing in automated plastic assembly equipment. During that time, he was a consultant to numerous automotive suppliers assisting in analyzing, designing, and implementing solutions to manufacturing problems.
Matt’s primary focus at EWI has been on the uses of power ultrasound along with the advancement of ultrasonic additive manufacturing and ultrasonic assisted machining. He has participated in multiple programs focused on the expanded uses within the aerospace, consumer products, automotive, and energy markets. His experience with multiple CAD/CAM packages, (SOLIDWORKS, CAMWorks, ProCAM, Solid Edge, and Pro/ENGINEER) has led to his involvement in several projects requiring offline programming for custom machinery.
Matt continues to be a key contributor to the field of power ultrasound with ongoing developments in tooling, equipment design, ultrasonic soldering, ultrasonic machining, and ultrasonic additive manufacturing. As a Technology Leader, he is responsible for directing EWI’s ultrasonics group to develop novel uses of power ultrasound to benefit manufacturing.
