About the presentation
Wireless communication, in particular 5G, is essential for smart factory and Industry 4.0 because it enables seamless, pervasive, and scalable connectivity among machines, people, sensors, mobile robots, automated guided vehicles (AGVs), and drones. In many cases, 5G reduces or removes cables from stationary, rotating, or other objects with limited mobility. The general chairs of the 5G-Alliance for Connected Industries and Automation (5G-ACIA) give an insightful view on where we are on the road toward industrial 5G, including:
- What’s been achieved so far towards a full integration into the shopfloor and the corresponding (emerging) technologies (e.g., ethernet, TSN, exposure interfaces, digital twin respectively, Industry 4.0)
- Examples on how industrial 5G is evaluated on various testbeds by different companies and research institutes for promising use cases
- What steps are still needed to lift this attractive new industrial 5G market

Powered by AMT and managed by GIE Media, The IMTS 2022 Conference features 69 different sessions you won’t want to miss so register today. Focused on a range of topics that include process innovation, plant operations, quality/inspection, and automation, The IMTS 2022 Conference addresses improving productivity; improving part quality; and developing a stable, competent workforce to lower the cost of manufacturing in the United States and create new levels of market demand.
Meet your presenter
Dr. Andreas Mueller is the head of communication and network technology in the corporate research department of Robert Bosch GmbH in Stuttgart, Germany. He’s also the chief expert for communication technologies for the IoT. Mueller coordinates the industrial 5G activities of Bosch across the different business units. He also serves as general chair of the 5G Alliance for Connected Industries and Automation (5G-ACIA). Prior to joining Bosch, Mueller was a research staff member at the Institute of Telecommunications of the University of Stuttgart, Germany, where he contributed to the further development of the 3GPP long term evolution toward LTE-advanced. He worked as a systems engineer for Rohde & Schwarz to develop a novel software-defined radio-based communication system for the German Armed Forces. Mueller holds a German diploma degree, a Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering (with distinction), and a M.Sc. degree in information technology, all from the University of Stuttgart, Germany.
Dr. Afif Osseiran is the director of industry engagements and research at Ericsson’s headquarter in Stockholm. He’s also vice-chairman of the 5G-ACIA alliance and a senior member of IEEE. His main responsibility is bridging insights, tactics, and strategies between technology, research/standardization, and industrial sectors such as manufacturing. He holds a doctorate degree from the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Sweden, a master’s degree from École Polytechnique de Montreal, and another one from INSA Rennes, France. Since 1999 he’s held several positions at Ericsson. From 2014 to 2017, he was director of radio communications at the Ericsson CTO office with the main responsibility of developing the strategy for 5G and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). From 2012 to 2014, he managed METIS, the EU 5G flagship project. He co-authored the first comprehensive book on 5G with Cambridge University Press and two books on IMT-Advanced with Wiley.
