Chief Operating Officer Gary Guthart of Intuitive Surgical Inc, maker of the da Vinci surgical robots, has been elevated to the position of chief executive officer, effective January 1, 2010.
Guthart will replace Lonnie Smith, who will remain chairman, as CEO.
Guthart, who holds several engineering degrees, joined Sunnyvale, CA-based Intuitive in 1996. He is also currently president, a title which he will retain.
Intuitive reported that third-quarter profit rose 12% , helped by a jump in instruments and accessories revenue and sales of new, more expensive versions of its flagship da Vinci robot systems.
