ITT Interconnect Solutions, a leading global manufacturer and supplier of connectors, interconnects, and cable assemblies, has partnered with Intuitive Surgical, a global technology leader in robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgery (MIS), in the use of its MIK micro-miniature circular connectors for Intuitive Surgical’s robotic surgery equipment. A custom version of ITT’s rugged yet lightweight MIK connector has been specified for use in the latest version of Intuitive Surgical’s da Vinci robotic surgery equipment, which surgeons control via computer in order to perform gall bladder, cancer, and other operations with a higher degree of accuracy and precision than is possible with a scalpel.
“We first began working with Intuitive Surgical ten years ago, when our zero insertion force DL connector was incorporated into the da Vinci system’s robotic arms, and we are pleased to have been called upon to provide a connector solution for their newest model,” says Keith Teichmann, director of marketing for ITT Interconnect Solutions. “The MIK connector features a rugged, high performance design making it ideal for applications where reliability is paramount, while the connector’s stainless steel shell provides improved RFI performance, which is integral for image transmission.”
The latest version of the da Vinci surgical robot features a number of improvements, including higher resolution graphics that are captured with a tiny high-definition, three-dimensional video camera. ITT’s MIK connector helps transmit the enhanced video images from the camera to the computer console so the surgeon can clearly see the robotic arm performing surgery on a patient in real time.
Available with an aluminum or stainless steel shell, the MIK connectors feature a twist pin contact system with crimped gold plated contacts, contact pitch spacing of 0.050", back-to-back cable assemblies and rear panel mounting with 32-gage wire. The connectors also feature a threaded coupling engagement mechanism, which provides strong, reliable coupling. The micro-miniature connectors accommodate 7, 19, 37, 55, and 85 contact arrangements. Operating temperature ranges from -55oC to 125oC. The connectors meet or exceed MIL-DTL-83513 specifications.
In addition to medical equipment, the MIK connectors are ideal for use in tactical communications, broadcast, biomedical, and instrumentation applications, as well as in miniature black boxes.
