The growth in investments worldwide related to protecting and improving the environment along with sweeping new legislation aimed at curbing domestic dependence on foreign oil are reshaping the American manufacturing landscape.
Manufacturers interested in obtaining more information and seeing real-world production advances in the energy sectors are urged to attend “Innovations in Energy: Sustainable Solutions for a New Generation,” July 22 from 9am to 2pm at the Mazak Center for Multitasking and Manufacturing Excellence, Florence, Kentucky. Sponsoring the event are machine-tool builder Mazak and tooling technology leader Kennametal Inc. (Latrobe, PA).
Attendees will benefit from presentations on energy market dynamics, strategies for more effective machine-tool utilization, and demonstrations on how to achieve productivity breakthroughs manufacturing components for wind energy, oil and gas, and other energy sectors.
Kennametal’s KSEM Plus modular drills, for example, can set new productivity standards in the manufacture of such wind energy components as tower segments, pitch bearings, hubs, housings, and frames. KSEM Plus doubles the metal-removal rate of older tools, drilling a 39mm hole to a 175mm depth in 42CrMo4 steel in less than 30 seconds. Such results can add hundreds of machine-capacity hours each year.
Other Kennametal advances applicable to the energy field include the company’s new Beyond platform of turning inserts, designed to increase metal-removal rates up to two or three times compared to conventional tooling; and Kennametal’s KM quick-change system, recognized as an ISO standard for improving productivity.
“Component suppliers are purchasing new machines or re-purposing existing equipment to meet forecasted growth,” says Latanyua Robinson, global market manager – industrial segments at Kennametal. “They realize the importance of tooling solutions in achieving productivity, quality, and safety demanded by energy OEMs and integrators.”
