February 2019 manufacturing technology orders slow

McLean, Va. (April 8, 2019) – Manufacturing technology orders totaled $337.2 million in February 2019, a 15% decline from January and a 7% decline from the previous February, according to the latest USMTO report from AMT. The year-to-date total was $735.2 million, less than 1% off the year-to-date total at this point last year.

US cutting tool consumption up 8% in February

Cleveland, Ohio – February 2019 U.S. cutting tool consumption totaled $205.6 million according to the U.S. Cutting Tool Institute (USCTI) and AMT – The Association For Manufacturing Technology. This total, as reported by companies participating in the Cutting Tool Market Report collaboration, was down 4.4% from January’s $215.1 million and up 8% when compared with the $190.3 million reported for February 2018. With a year-to-date total of $420.7 million, 2019 is up 13% when compared with 2018.

Johnson & Johnson Innovation, Children's National Health System collaborate

Officials from Johnson & Johnson Innovation LLC and Children's National Health System (Children's National) announce a collaboration to launch JLABS @ Washington, DC, a 32,000ft2 facility to be located at the new Children's National Research and Innovation Campus in Washington, DC. This Children's National expansion is set on a nearly 12-acre portion of the former Walter Reed Army Medical Center campus in the nation's capital. The co-location of the Research and Innovation Campus with key partners in the areas of public health research, innovation, and incubator space is critical to accelerating the translation of potential breakthrough discoveries into new treatments and technologies. The JLABS @ Washington, DC site will be open to pharmaceutical, medical device, consumer and health technology companies that are aiming to advance the development of new drugs, medical devices, precision diagnostics and health technologies, including applications in pediatrics.

Additive manufacturing milestone

Heraeus presented a world record additive manufactured (AM) gear wheel made of amorphous metals at Automate 2019 in Chicago last week. The gear wheel was printed in a standard SLM system with material from Heraeus. With this display, Heraeus broke boundaries in 3D printing, opening new design possibilities for a wide range of industries – from medical technology and robotics to aviation, automation solutions, and the automotive industry.
