Laser Welding Solutions

Rofin-Lasag's facility offers laser welding solutions for the medical device industry.

Joining components of various materials and geometries presents a common challenge in the medical device industry. Laser welding and fusion is now the established method of choice in the manufacturing of Medical Device and Implants. The continuing decrease in feature size while maintaining strength and product integrity lead to new manufacturing requirements. Particularly process repeatability and thus stability of the utilized tools and equipment require an engineered solution approach. Other factors to consider are in process quality verification and documentation.

Regularly the medical product development team and the laser equipment provider are working in close cooperation to find the complete, cost efficient solution, and process.

In North America Rofin-Sinar Inc.. and Lasag Industrial Lasers Inc. recently combined their specific Medical Device Industry knowledge and product portfolio. A new division, Rofin-Lasag AG was formed based in Buffalo Grove, IL, with a team experienced and dedicated to the needs of the medical device Industry. Rofin-Lasag provides laser applications, process development support, technical service and spare parts in addition to a team of five regional sales managers. In addition the Rofin Santa Clara, CA, office provides local services in the Western U.S..

The collective product range allows Rofin to offer solutions for laser welding, soldering, polymer fusion etc. Available laser sources range from CO2 lasers, traditional lamp-pumped YAG lasers to fiber lasers and process specific lasers. Diode lasers at various wavelength are available and utilized for polymer fusion or soldering procedures.

This year two new products where added, each prepared for a specific process request:

  • The GreenMix laser for welding of non-ferrous metals such as copper e.g. electrical contacts as frequently required with medical sensors or connectors. --> READ MORE
  • The LFS Long Pulse Fiber laser for small laser spot sizes, high-available peak power and the advantage of high electrical efficiency and low maintenance requirement.  --> READ MORE
