Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero announced that advanced manufacturing company Symmetry Medical will expand their operations in Lansing. The company says this will create 160 new jobs over the next five years, and they plan to invest $14.8 million in new equipment.
"This is yet another major step forward in our efforts to diversify our local economy and redefine Lansing as a new technology and advanced manufacturing powerhouse," Bernero says.
Last year the company had to layoff more than 50 workers because of a troubled economy. Bernero says they're able to hire now thanks to a decision to work together through tough times. "It's economic gardening if you will, we nurtured this company,we paid attention to them, we worked with them and then when they were ready to expand they wanted to stay here in Lansing," says Bernero.
The plan is contingent upon approval of the state MEGA board on September 14, and approval of a local personal property incentive by the Lansing City Council. Symmetry currently has nearly 400 employees in Lansing.
