Medical device engineering successes

Trelleborg Sealing Solutions engineering and design capabilities address the needs of life sciences and medical device manufacturers in an array of applications.

Trelleborg Sealing Solutions is one of the world's leading developers, manufacturers and suppliers of precision seals and bearings. A specific example is the work of Trelleborg Sealing Solutions is with Freedom Innovations, an Irvine, California-based leader in advanced technology prosthetic devices for lower limb amputees. Freedom's products and technologies are distributed around the world, and provide people with physical challenges the ability to reach their full potential.

Trelleborg Sealing Solutions worked with Freedom Innovations to help advance the Plié ™3 Microprocessor Controlled (MPC) Knee by supplying critical components within the computer-controlled damper inside Freedom's Plié 3 MPC knee. This collaboration has enabled Freedom Innovations to achieve a new level of performance when it comes to water resistance, extended use and reduced maintenance. Trelleborg supplied five specifically-engineered components within the computer-controlled damper. These included a Zurcon AS Wiper, Zurcon L-Cup, bushing, Turcon Slydring and custom fluoroelastomer bladder.

Michael Palmer, R&D project manager at Freedom Innovations, said: "Trelleborg Sealing Solutions has been more than a supplier – but a partner that has taken the time to understand the unique challenges of our application. Their engineering support and guidance in designing a sealing system with low friction, no noise, and no leakage in a harsh environment has been key in providing the product reliability that our customers demand."

Jerome Zawada, Life sciences segment manager for Trelleborg Sealing Solutions, said: "We are honored to have been able to work with Freedom Innovations' great team and deliver our total value of ownership approach. Not only will the Plié™ 3 knee enable patients to have a more natural gait, it will also allow them to become more active. We are proud to be a part of a project that enriches the lives of those who have suffered the loss of limbs."
