Doosan Celebrates 30 Years in North America

Thirty years ago, Doosan Infracore (originally Daewoo) opened its doors in North America for the distribution, sales and service of a family of powerful, high horsepower machine tools, known then and now as Puma turning centers.

In its first year, the company offered the DSN20 – a two axis NC lathe with a top-of-the-line Fanuc 6T controller.  Features included a powerful 20 Hp, 2000 rpm spindle drive, quick change aloris tool posts, and rapid traverses that topped out at 400 ipm.

Much has changed during the past three decades.  The name changed in 2005 from Daewoo to Doosan Infracore.  The line of machines grew from a single NC lathe to now more than 60 horizontal turning centers and mill-turns, 35 vertical and horizontal machining centers, plus boring mills and vertical turning centers.  The sales/service network now numbers more than 50 distributors located throughout North, Central and South America, and Doosan, itself, has become one of the Western Hemisphere’s three largest machine tool suppliers.

But while Doosan and its family of machine tools have changed, what hasn’t changed is the company’s commitment to machine power.  Each Doosan machine is designed to do in a single pass what other machines of comparable size often do in three passes or more.  And features
like integral boxways and torque tube construction -- distinguishing characteristics of the company’s early machines in North America -- are still featured in many of its machines, today.

As part of its 30th anniversary celebration, Doosan is offering huge savings on key turning centers and machining centers, plus a gift box containing instruments of importance and convenience to people in the metalworking industry.

Looking ahead, Doosan will exhibit a broad selection of advanced turning centers and machining centers at booth #8100 in the front-row booth of IMTS 2010.
