Helping Michigan Manufacturers Enter the Medical Sector

Seco Tools Announces Conference, Co-sponsored by Automation Alley, Oakland County Economic Development, and Sterling Heights Chamber March 30, 2010

Seco Tools is hosting “Manufacturing Makeover: Medical Equipment and Devices”, a conference co-sponsored by the Sterling Heights Chamber of Commerce, Automation Alley, and Oakland County Planning & Economic Development, which is aimed at helping area manufacturers convert their shops from automotive to medical component work. The event takes place on Tuesday, March 30 from 8:00 am – 3:30 pm at the Seco Tools North American headquarters at 2805 Bellingham Road, Troy, MI.  The event is specifically developed for metalcutting shops that want to diversify into the medical manufacturing arena.

“Although we see the auto industry work is picking up, we believe it is critical for the health of our region that companies diversify their production and secure work from other industry sectors,” says Seco President Kurt Nordlund. “This conference will provide a roadmap to attendees on the opportunities in medical manufacturing as well as the tools needed and resources available to help with the change.”

Presenters at the event include representatives from the Oakland County and Michigan Economic Development Corporations (OEDC and MEDC), Congressman Gary Peters, Beaumont Hospital representative, machine tool and CAD/CAM specialists, as well as medical manufacturing companies.  Additionally, between presentations, there will be a mini-trade show and live medical component machining demonstrations taking place in the Seco Technical Center.

This is the second in a series of Seco seminars presenting diversification strategies for metalcutting manufacturers. Over 50 machine shop owners and representatives attended the Seco Tools “Tooling up for Wind Power Generation” conference last year. The company was lauded for its efforts by Cindy Douglas, vice president of business development and attraction, MEDC, who states, “I don’t know of another company doing anything like this, I applaud Seco Tools for this effort.”

There is no fee for the conference, but companies must qualify as a metalworking manufacturer in order to attend. Seating is limited and registration is required. To register, visit http://www.secotools.com/wps/portal/northamerica/Epi_2919 or call 248.528.5478.
