Micrus Endovascular Corp. will develop treatments for aneurysms through a partnership with Flexible Stenting Solutions Inc.
The companies did not disclose terms of their deal. The companies will make devices that divert blood flow away from bulging veins, or aneurysms, inside the skull. Aneurysms can be fatal when they burst, and the companies said diverting blood away from the bulges allows them to heal.
The products will be designed to treat the biggest aneurysms, called the large and giant varieties, which make up 20 to 25 percent of aneurysms in the skull. Micrus will be in charge of testing and the regulatory process. It made an upfront payment to Flexible Stenting, and will make additional payments as the products advance through clinical testing and regulatory review.
Micrus will also pay a royalty on sales if any products are approved.
Micrus is a medical device maker based in San Jose, Calif. Flexible Stenting Solutions is a privately held company based in Eatontown, N.J.
