Mori Seiki has been selected to serve as an official supplier to WorldSkills Calgary 2009. The 40th WorldSkills competition will take place September 1-7, 2009 in Calgary, Alberta and will have competitors from all over the globe.

Machines from Mori Seiki’s Dura Series were chosen for use in multiple events in the 40th World Skills Competition. This biannual event was created to promote increased technical proficiency within participating countries. Over 10,000 young engineers have competed in the World Skills Competition throughout its long history. For this year’s event, over 1,000 participants from 51 countries will compete for top honors. All participants have won highly competitive preliminary contests to qualify for a coveted spot at the event. Those competing in the Milling, Turning and Team Manufacturing challenges will also get the added benefit of receiving advanced Mori Seiki online operator training (Education On Demand).

“It is a great honor to be selected twice consecutively as an official supplier for the WorldSkills competition,” says Dr. Masahiko Mori, President of Mori Seiki Co., Ltd. “Workforce development continues to be a challenge in manufacturing. Events like these promote the capabilities of talent young people and offer them the opportunity to benefit from the latest technologies.”

Over two dozen Mori Seiki machines will be tested rigorously during the milling and turning events at WorldSkills 2009. The DuraVertical5100 vertical machining center and DuraTurn2050 lathe have been selected to highlight the abilities of the competitors.

In designing the DuraVertical5100, Mori Seiki surpassed previous machine designs in the areas of reliability and accuracy. DuraVertical meets the demand for high-precision parts with outstanding 6 micron (0.0002”) positioning accuracy. Mori Seiki patented technologies support heavy milling at 18.4 cubic inches per minute. DuraVertical machining centers are equipped with a 40-taper, high-torque spindle with 10,000 rpm. The DuraTurn2050 was developed with an extremely rigid body to minimize the effects of vibration and increase accuracy, even over long-term operation. Roller guides further stabilize the machine’s turning ability. The machine contains 12 tool stations and a maximum rapid traverse rate of 944.9 ipm across both the X- and Z-axes.

All machines in the Mori Seiki lineup are easy to maintain and known for their reliability and long operating life. The Dura Series offers high performance at a competitive for an overall lowest lifetime cost of ownership.
