Sony Electronics’ Medical Systems Division demonstrated the company’s new 4K display technology as a work-in-progress, technology preview for the medical industry at the recent American College of Surgeons (ACS) Annual Clinical Congress. Delivering four times the resolution of today’s high definition (HD) displays, “4K” is derived from a 4096 x 2160 pixel matrix, or approximately 8.8 million total pixels.
The 4K resolution also delivers an extremely high contrast ratio. This translates to the ability to project truer levels of black, something that is critical to medical image quality for surgical and diagnostic applications.
“At Sony, we see no limit to the potential advancements of medical display technology, and 4K continues our efforts to push the limits of innovation to benefit surgeons and other medical professionals,” states Julie Holodak, senior marketing manager, Sony Electronics’, Medical Systems Division. “We believe the uncompromising picture quality and resolution of 4K technology is destined to help improve visualization for the medical field.”
Demonstrated during the event was a 56” monitor, Sony’s 4K technology is already in widespread use across a range of professional applications.
Sony Digital Cinema 4K technology is at the heart of the movie theater industry, with more than 13,500 Sony Digital Cinema 4K projectors installed worldwide, and the demand increasing.
